Newcastle United’s reported interest in Xherdan Shaqiri is perfect for Liverpool
Newcastle United might be the only team around who can pay Liverpool’s initial price-tag for the Swiss star.
by Mathew NashThe Daily Mail is suggesting that Newcastle United are keen on a deal to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Liverpool this summer.
The Magpies have reportedly made contact with the Swiss star’s representatives regarding a deal and Liverpool are open to his sale, should the right offer come in.
For Liverpool, this could not be better news.
It has been clear for months now that Shaqiri was set for the Anfield exit door. Sevilla and Roma have both been credited with an interest in the playmaker and, as reported by the Liverpool Echo, the reds were hoping to sell Shaqiri for a fee in the region of £27 million.
However, that was in March, before the current global health crisis truly made an impact on the economic nature of football.
Now, with clubs unlikely to be able to spend big this summer, Liverpool’s asking price has reduced. According to the ECHO, Liverpool might have been looking at just £12.5 million to sell Shaqiri.
But Newcastle United are likely to be one of the only teams around this summer who can afford Liverpool’s initial estimate.
The Magpies are due to be taken over by a Saudi-backed consortium, immediately making them one of the richest clubs in world football.
At which point, Liverpool can likely demand the best fee possible for Shaqiri. Whilst it may not be the £25 million they originally wanted, it is likely to be closer to that figure than the lower £12.5 million recent estimate.
At which point, Liverpool can use some of the money made from the Shaqiri sale, to potentially do some business of their own.
In the long-term it does mean that Newcastle are likely to become a bigger threat both on and off the pitch to Liverpool.
However, in the short-term Newcastle United’s interest could be a blessing for Liverpool this summer regarding Shaqiri.
