James Robinson steps away from Ballarat City

by

Ballarat City senior head coach James Robinson has left the club.

Ballarat City FC chair David Sproules informed The Courier of Robinson's decision on Wednesday, saying he elected to leave the club of his own accord.

He said Robinson is yet to provide a reason as to why.

"My understanding is that it is a personal decision and it had nothing to do with the club," Sproules said.

"It's possible he had other opportunities, or he might have been concerned about financial issues or with views regarding the game.

"It's hard to know because he hasn't put anything in writing."

Robinson coached Ballarat City's senior men's team in the National Premier League two competition for the last two seasons. However his role extended far beyond coaching.

As the club's director of football, Robinson oversaw all football operations. Last year he outlined plans to turn Ballarat City into a development hub for Western Victoria and, as a former A-League player himself, engaged heavily with A-League club Western United.

The Courier understands Robinson ceased all involvement with Ballarat City in April following the outbreak of COVID-19.

"We tried to work with him as best we could through COVID-19 when funds were tight," Sproules said.

Sproules said the club's technical coordinator Jonathan Davey has taken on the role of interim head coach, while Brett Bedggood is directing football operations.

"As a board, we've established good people and a strong group to take the game forward by working with the BDSA and other key groups for the betterment of the game," Sproules said.
