Bajaj Chetak design patent registered in Europe

Bajaj Auto has managed to officially register the design of the Chetak electric scooter, in Europe. The design patent has been registered at the European Union Intellectual Property Office or the EUIPO. The firm applied to register the Chetak's design in February 2020 and has received a registration that is valid until November 2029.
This patent goes a long way to protect the Bajaj Chetak from plagiarism and prevent unlawful reproduction of its design.
The European Union Intellectual Property Office is responsible for the registration of the EU trademark and industrial design rights. The organisation’s aim is to safeguard novel designs from companies or individuals that copy or reproduce these designs. In other words, it gives the holder of the registration the power to exclusively use the design and prevent any third party from using it without consent.
When the Bajaj Chetak was launched in India, Rakesh Sharma, executive director, Bajaj Auto said that the company is evaluating the prospect of selling the Chetak in global markets. He also added that multiple international markets have expressed interest in the Chetak e-scooter.
The design registration, hence, acts as a safety net for Bajaj, as it prevents the competition in such markets from copying the design and reaping the fruits of its labour.
In India, the Bajaj Chetak is available in two variants – the base-spec Urbane and the top-spec Premium. It is powered by a 3.8kW/4.1kW (continuous/peak power) electric motor, which sends power to the rear wheel via a unique automated transmission. The 3kWh, IP67 rated lithium-ion battery claims a real-world range of 95km in Eco mode and 85km in Sport mode.
