Following a day's drop in the number of COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the metropolitan satellite township of Mira Bhayandar witnessed another dramatic spike in the spread of the virus on Wednesday when 36 persons tested positive for the infection. Two more persons succumbed to the infection on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 20.

On Tuesday, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation had reported a total of 8 positive cases.

MBMC sources said that while reports about the death of a 82-year-old woman from Saibaba Nagar, in Mira Road who passed away on May 23, was received on Wednesday, the details of the other casualty are still awaited.

A maximum of the 36 positive cases on Wednesday were reported from Ganesh Deval Nagar in Bhayandar (west)-- 8 cases --, Indralok Phase 1 in Bhayandar (east) --4 cases, and Ambedkar Nagar in Bhayandar (west) -- 4 cases.

While 26 of these cases were contacts of people who had earlier tested positive, the rest were isolated cases, MBMC sources added.

The cumulative positive cases in the area has now gone upto 577 while 354 of them have been cured and discharged from hospitals.

Significantly, despite the present spike in the positive cases, the MBMC has decided to further relax the total shutdown norms by allowing the opening of opticals, hardware stores, electrical appliances repair shops, puncture shops/garages and plumbing shops. Grocery stores, essential shops and bakeries will continue to remain open between 11 am and 5 pm, while home delivery vegetables, fruits, mutton, chicken and fish has been allowed between 9 am and 11 pm.
