Fast & Furious Crossroads release date is August, new trailer looks… hmm

by

The new Fast & Furious video game has a confirmed release date and a new campaign trailer, but it may not be what you’re expecting.

The Fast & Furious franchise is 20 years old next year (really!) and for almost all that time people have been wondering why video games have never tried to take more advantage of its success, either with similarly themed games or official tie-ins.

There’s no easy answer to that but we are at least getting a proper big budget game starring most of the current cast and made by Project CARS developer Slightly Mad Studios.

But to judge by this new gameplay footage from the single-player story mode it barely looks like a driving game at all, more like some sort of weird James Bond spin-off – which is probably quite authentic when you consider what the films are like now.

The official description for Fast & Furious Crossroads classifies it as a ‘vehicular-heist action game’ which seems relatively accurate to what’s going on in the trailer.

The one thing the game definitely has going for it is an authentic Hollywood cast, with Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson all reprising their roles, alongside Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) and Asia Kate Dillon (John Wick 3).

But as well as the story mode there’ll also be a mysterious ‘three-way multiplayer mode’, which Slightly Mad aren’t willing to describe in detail just yet.

Fast & Furious Crossroads will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on 7 August.

That will be considerably before the ninth movie, which was put back until early April next year because of the coronavirus.
