Around 10,000 Leaving Cert students have yet to sign up to receive calculated grades.

The deadline for registering is Thursday May 28th at 10pm, and Minister for Education Joe McHugh has pleaded for students who have not registered to not leave it until the last minute.

Registration is required in order for those in Leaving Cert this year to receive grades and to confirm whoch level they will be taking in each exam.

An estimated 61,000 students will sit the exams this year and, accordng to the Irish Times, about 50,000 had registered using the gov.ie/leavingcertificate portal by lunchtime on Wednesday.

Some school principals have expressed their concerns that a small but not insignificant number of students may fail to register after losing contact with their school for a variety of reasons.

For example, last year, around 800 students failed to sit the Leaving Cert exams, despite being registered to do so.

The Department of Education is believed to be working on a contingency plan should this situation occur, although a spokesperson refused to comment on the matter.
