Fast & Furious Crossroads first gameplay trailer reveals new August release date

by

Universal Games and Project Cars developer Slightly mad Studios have revealed the first gameplay video for the upcoming Fast & Furious Crossroads movie tie-in. It’s also revealed a new release date for the game, rolling out to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on 7th August.

Tapping into the sensationalised vehicular action of the Fast & Furious franchise, Crossroads is a team-based vehicular heist action game. Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson reprising their roles as Dom, Letty, and Roman, joined by Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery, The Walking Dead) and Asia Kate Dillon (Billions, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum), as the crew pull jobs through Athens, Barcelona, Morocco and beyond.

The gameplay video shows several scenarios, from trying to take down a hovercraft to shooting missiles at a giant rocket, and dragging around a giant bomb-like wrecking ball or something. It’s about as nonsensical as you could expect, but it gives you an idea of how the action will play out.

It’s an unenviable task to blend the constant forward motion of high-speed car driving with sensible action that players of differed skill levels can feel in control of, but this looks just about mad enough that it might kind of work… with a fair bit of slow motion thrown in for good measure. You’ll be switching between characters and cars, making use of various gadgets along the way.

Alongside this will be a three-way multiplayer mode, with more details on this coming soon.

Originally planned for a May release alongside Fast & Furious 9, the Covid-19 pandemic saw the film delayed until April 2021. Rather than wait a whole year for the game to be released, with the focus shifting to next-gen platforms by that point, the decision has been made to release it in August instead.

It’s quite a departure for Slightly Mad Studios, who are best known for the Project Cars series of sim racers that they kicked off half a decade ago. The company was acquired in 2019 by Codemasters, but has existing work and licenses with Bandai Namco to complete before Codies could consider self-publishing their games.
