The former St Mirren striker penned a three-year deal at the Tannadice Park side in the summer after making transferring from Ayr United.
Shankland has a fine goalscoring record in the Scottish second tier, netting 24 times in 2018-19.
However he is unproven at Premiership level, making just 17 appearances during a four-year-spell with Aberdeen earlier in his career and some Forest fans have been reacting to the rumour.
"He certainly seems to know how to put the ball in the net but I’m not sure what system Dundee Utd play," one said. "I’d take the chance on him given his record and his age, his value will probably increase."
Another said: "Might take him some to adapt to our 4-2-3-1 system, but his goalscoring record suggests he might be worth a punt."
"Not sure why we’d want another striker unless one of ours is going to leave," a third added
"Lyle Taylor all day long, not another Scottish lightweight, just like (Jason) Cummings!" said another.
Forest currently have Lewis Grabban, Nuno da Costa and Tyler Walker in their forward ranks.
