‘The Pressure Of Playing For Chiefs & Pirates As A Foreigner’

Austin Muwowo’s lack of regular game-time at Orlando Pirates concerns countryman Noah Chivuta. 

The Zambian international midfielder, who was voted as the best player in his country for his performances last season before arriving in Mzansi, has had an unsuccessful spell with Bucs thus far in the Absa Premiership, after making only two appearances to date.

Like countryman Lazarous Kambole, who hasn't been in top form for Kaizer Chiefs in his first season, Chivuta is worried that the two players could lose focus because of their situation.

Chivuta, who played for a number of clubs in Mzansi’s top-flight including Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United, has spoken about the pressure of playing for the country’s big clubs as a foreigner.    

“When he joined Pirates, which is a big club, he needed time to adjust. He is young and maybe he was supposed to be introduced slowly. But in a big club like Pirates if a foreigner is signed there is no time for that. There’s no time for grooming you again. You have taken a space in the foreign quota. A club has to sign five foreigners and you have taken a place there already. They can’t be nurturing him to say he must be given time,” said Chivuta.

“He had go there and start delivering straight away. If they give you two or three games and you haven’t settled, they will put you outside. That’s what is happening to those boys. The clubs they have joined are clubs that want a lot of success where supporters will judge and ask, what did they see in this boy? Why did they sign this person? They brought him from Zambia, but what did they see? Questions will be asked that, don’t we have this kind of talent in South Africa? They will ask, why did they sign a foreigner like that? Being young like that, their careers could end like that. He and Kambole can lose focus like that,” the Thailand-based midfielder told the Siya crew.
