“They should be charged with murder” – George Floyd’s sister says firing officers not enough

The sister of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee onto his neck for at least eight minutes, said firing the officers involved is not enough, calling for them to be charged with murder.

A shocking video showed the police officer pinning down George Floyd to the pavement with his knee on the man’s neck for several minutes, despite the black man yelling that he cannot breathe.

Floyd was identified by prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, who said he had been retained by the Floyd family.

A police statement said officers were responding to a “forgery in progress.” “Officers were advised that the suspect was sitting on top of a blue car and appeared to be under the influence,” the statement said. “Two officers arrived and located the suspect, a male believed to be in his 40s, in his car. He was ordered to step from his car.

“After he got out, he physically resisted officers. Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress. Officers called for an ambulance,” according to the statement.

The man died soon after, the statement said, adding: “At no time were weapons of any type used by anyone involved in this incident. … Body worn cameras were on and activated during this incident.”

Speaking on the “TODAY” show Wednesday, Bridgett Floyd who is the sister of George Floyd as called for more punitive action against the officers.

Adding that the loss of her brother was “heartbreaking” for her family, she said;

“I would like for those officers to be charged with murder because that’s exactly what they did. They murdered my brother; he was crying for help.”
