In Watford, Hertfordshire, fans showed their dedication to McNuggets as they sat in cars for two hours and waited patiently for their takeaway meals.

In total, McDonald's has so far reopened 44 branches, of which five are delivery only, 29 drive-thru only and 10 available as both.

But between June 2 and June 4, McDonald's will reopen 51 more branches for delivery only and 924 for drive-thru only.

Of the already reopened drive-thrus, 24 of those will next week also be available for delivery.

The much-loved chain was closed on March 22 due to lockdown but in May, fans were thrilled to hear they could get their mitts on their go-to hangover cure once again.

TRAFFIC MADNESS

Police were called to the Boongate store in Peterborough after huge numbers of customers rushed to the shop when it re-opened at 11am last week.

Staff at all branches will be temperature checked before each shift and workers will have to make sure they are social distancing.

Perspex screens are installed at all drive-through windows and staff will be given protective equipment, the firm said.

McDonald’s has called for customers to be “patient and supportive” of staff as sites reopen, warning that service “will not be as quick as you might be used to”.

Today, McDonalds UK said in a statement: "This means every Drive Thru in the UK and Ireland will reopen between Tuesday and Thursday next week and we will start to expand the availability of McDelivery too.

"This is only possible following the hard work of the teams in our 44 pilot restaurants.

"Over the last fortnight, our employees, franchisees and suppliers have worked tirelessly to implement new procedures to enable safe working so that we can now help all parts of the UK and Ireland to enjoy the return of the Big Mac.

"With fewer employees working in our kitchens and service areas, our teams will still need your patience and support as they continue to adjust to the new ways of working."
