‘The Wretched’: Big Memorial Day Weekend Brings Chart-Topping Drive-in Box Office Total to $600,000

by

IFC Midnight’s creature feature The Wretched (review) has been at the top of the charts for the entire month of May thanks to a run in drive-in theaters that began on May 1st, and this past weekend the film expanded from 21 drive-ins to a total of 59 locations across the United States. Not surprisingly, Memorial Day Weekend was the film’s most successful to date.

The Wretched pulled in $236,334 from Friday through Memorial Day (Monday), bringing the horror movie’s drive-in box office total to $598,943 as of Monday. Now in its fourth week of release, the film remains at the top of the box office charts, an unexpected reign of dominance for an indie horror movie that normally would’ve been swallowed up by bigger competition. Of course, it must be noted that The Wretched‘s box office success is largely a result of there being no competition at all right now, but the film has proven to be a big win for IFC either way.

The last time we reported on The Wretched‘s box office total was one week ago, and at the time the film had scared up $316,557. One week later, that number has nearly doubled.

At this point, the film is on track to hit the $1 million landmark in the coming weeks. Further proof that horror, no matter what’s going on in the world, always finds a way.

The Wretched follows a defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent’s imminent divorce, who faces off with a thousand year-old witch who is living beneath the skin of the woman next door.
