Edo 2020: Hours after his endorsement, Ize-Iyamu picks APC governorship form to face Obaseki

Less than twenty-four hours after he was endorsed by the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state as a consensus candidate for the forthcoming governorship poll in the state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has collected his nomination form.

The Nation reports that Ize-Iyamu collected the nomination form for the governorship ticket of the ruling APC at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja on Wednesday, May 27.

Legit.ng gathered that Edo state governorship election is slated for September 19, 2020.

The ruling party is holding its governorship primaries on June 22, in Edo state to pick its standard-bearer for September gubernatorial election in the state.

Ize-Iyamu was a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in 2016.

APC had granted Ize-Iyamu a waiver to enable him to participate in the primary. He stormed the party national secretariat in Abuja today along with his supporters.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the re-election bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki may have hit the rock as Ize-Iyamu, emerged the party's consensus candidate for the next gubernatorial election in the state.

It was reported that Ize-Iyamu, a former Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), emerged the candidate of the party on the night of Tuesday, May 26, in Abuja through a consensus arrangement.

Ize-Iyamu, a pastor of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was presented by chairman of the screening committee, Senator Francis Alimikhena, the representative of Edo North senatorial district.

The chairman of the screening committee while formally presenting Ize-Iyamu as the consensus candidate to slug it out with Governor Obaseki on June 22 with the direct mode of governorship primary election, wished him success.

In another report, the Edo governor declared that he was not desperate about his reelection for the second term in office.

The governor said the next gubernatorial election in the state was not a priority for him now.

Obaseki noted that he was more concerned about keeping the people of the state alive especially now that COVID-19 cases are rising.

Also, the minister of state for labour and employment, Festus Keyamo, denied claims that he fabricated threats against those who are opposed to President Buhari. On his Twitter page, Keyamo brought the notice of Nigerians to a statement (falsely attributed to him) to persons who did not vote for the APC.
