 Court Proceedings In Hospital For Tortured Opposition Activists

A day after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested and charged three female opposition activists, court proceedings were held today at a private medical facility where the three are currently detained.

The three opposition activists, Harare West legislator Joanna Mamombe and MDC Alliance party youth leaders Cecelia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, were recently abducted, tortured and sexually molested by as yet unidentified people.

The three have been charged for allegedly staging an anti-government protest over hunger and abuse of COVID-19 resources. The charges stem from an unauthorised flash demonstration which occured in Warren Park on the 13th of May which the three led and attended.

At the court session which was held at the private medical centre in Parktown in the capital, Harare Magistrate Barbra Mateko presided over the initial remand proceedings.

The state proposed stringent bail conditions for the three female activists which include reporting 3 times a week to their nearest police stations as well as paying a bail deposit of ZWL$ 2 000 each.

However, Magistrate Mateko remanded the three in custody pending a bail ruling on Thursday.

The court session at the hospital, as well as the arrest of the three, has caused outrage among Zimbabwean citizens who allege that this is a gross abuse of power. Most are indignant that the perpetrators of the heinous crimes are yet to be arrested while the victims are further being brutalised.
