Breaking: Tesla Cuts Model 3, X, & S Prices Up To 6% In North America, Model Y Unchanged

According to Reuters, Tesla has cut prices in North America on all of its cars except the Model Y by up to 6%. At the same time, free unlimited Supercharging on Model S and X has been removed. The delivery times for custom ordered Model 3’s has been reduced from 5–7 weeks to 3–5 weeks for the Standard Range Plus trim and 4–5 weeks for the other Model 3’s. Similarly, the custom order times for the Model X and S have shifted from 3–7 weeks to 4–6 weeks. (Just note these are very rough estimates.)

I was at the Tesla Delivery Center in Tampa a couple of days ago and was surprised that about 100 cars were ready for delivery, many more than they had showing as available for delivery on the Tesla Inventory site. It appears that the EV-CPO.com site does a better job of capturing more (if not all) of the available inventory. At the time of writing, the EV-CPO site shows 60 Model 3’s in Florida, while the Tesla site shows only 10 cars available.

While researching an article on the Model Y, I noticed that the Model Y is $4,000 more than the comparable Model 3 and that you get a lot of extra utility for that $4,000. There is still a lot of pent up demand for the small, more affordable crossover, while the Model 3, X, and S have all been available for years.

While the price cuts are desirable from a buyer’s standpoint and help Tesla advance its mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy, they do show that Tesla’s demand for cars has been affected somewhat by the worldwide health crisis. Even with the Fremont factory shut down for nearly 2 months, Tesla still has supply slightly exceeding demand in North America. It is also important to mention that with gas prices about a dollar a gallon lower (and electricity prices down slightly in my community), the fuel savings of an electric vehicle are reduced by thousands of dollars, if low gas prices persist.

It is unknown is if this price adjustment affects the price of the “off menu” Model 3 Standard Range. If the $35,000 trim is also cut $2,000, that would be a new low of $33,000. However, not much is ever said about the Model 3 Standard Range and few people seem to buy it.
