Building collapses, injures one

According to the victim Collins Ainembabazi, he was standing under the shade of the building and out of the blue, the shade collapsed on him.

A shade of a commercial building located along Masindi-Kampala highway in Masindi town yesterday collapsed and injured one person.

According to the victim Collins Ainembabazi, he was standing under the shade of the building and out of the blue, the shade collapsed on him injuring both arms and right leg.

Ainembabazi who sustained minor injuries was rushed to Masindi hospital and later discharged.

He attributes the collapse to poor workmanship of the engineers who use less cement while constructing such buildings.

Masindi municipal engineer John Kasaija said he is yet to ascertain the cause of the collapsed shade. He, however, warned the public to desist from setting up structures without approved plan from the municipal authority.

The chairperson Masindi business community Hajj Abudallah Sserunkuma appealed to building owners to use certified engineers while setting up buildings.

He also appealed to the municipal engineering department to always monitor all constructions in the municipality.

Residents standing nearby the building said it harbours a bar and pool table were people spend their leisure time. Fortunately, due to the lockdown, only a few people were under the shade by the time it collapsed.
