Netflix to Allow Watching of Partially Downloaded Shows

XDA has reported that Netflix is looking to allow users to watch partially downloaded shows and movies as part of its new update. Previously users could only watch content after they had fully downloaded it but it looks like Netflix could change this.

Netflix introduced offline downloads so individuals could watch shows whilst not being connected back in 2016. Users welcomed this move as it allowed everyone to save on data by downloading shows in advance of watching. This would also mean not having to rely on unreliable data whilst out. New strings found in the 7.58.0 Netflix app update appears to support the playing of partially downloaded content.

Partial Downloads Main Applications

The main applications of being able to watch partially downloaded shows from Netflix are fairly obvious with Netflix looking like they could be rolling this new function out in the near future. The aim would be that users who lose data connection or run out of data all together could still watch some content.

This looks like a more convenience-based move from Netflix, realizing the need for more flexibility in the service. Another example of this would be their move to allow users to watch content whilst locking their phone last month, again offering greater convenience.

Another key use of this update which users have pointed out would be to eliminate buffering. The idea of this being that one could begin downloading a show before intending to watch it. Then watching the said show before it has been fully downloaded. This would allow the show to complete its download whilst watching and avoiding buffering if done cleverly.

Netflix Listening to Feedback

Netflix users have been calling for the company to introduce the ability to watch partially downloaded content on twitter. The company welcomed the feedback and claimed that it would look into this as a new feature.

However, it is not clear as to whether Netflix was already planning on making this change prior to calls from users. It is possible that the company already had this update in the works before feedback came from users. So far Netflix has listened to users and resisted the temptation to introduce ads despite calls from investors. This can, therefore, likely another move to ensure they stay true to their customers.

Overall, this looks like an interesting move fro the company. Users are expected to welcome the change as it should allow greater flexibility whilst using the app.
