Coronation Street cast race to finish half-filmed episodes ahead of stars' return to work
by Brogan-Leigh HurstThe cast of Coronation Street are set to be facing a tight deadline in coming weeks ahead of returning back to work.
The ITV soap suspended filming in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, but according to soap star Andy Whyment, the cast and crew are looking at returning to the Weatherfield set on June 8.
But there is one problem, as he revealed there are some half-filmed episodes that need finishing off before they can start filming the next batch.
Andy, 39, who plays Kirk Sutherland on the show, believes it will give them room to film another three weeks of content.
Speaking on Talk Sports The Sports Bar, he told Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy: "They're [show bosses] looking at going back around June 8th. That's all dependent on government.
"It's going to be completely different because of all the distancing, so it's going to be interesting times when we go back.
"I think they had about eight episodes half-filmed, so they're going to concentrate on getting them finished first and that will give us another three weeks then.
"I do think ITV will want to get us back up to six episodes a week as soon as they can."
The actor also touched on Corrie's 60th anniversary special and how the pressure is on under the current circumstances.
He continued: "It's a massive year for Corrie because we're 60 in December, so we need to get back filming ASAP and crack on again. But once we've got those eight episodes filmed it will give us a little more leeway.
"There's going to be no kissing or holding hands. If Kirk is walking down the street with Beth we sometimes link, or hold hands. But there's going to be none of that going on."
On a more positive note, he added: "But everyone is going to have to get used to it. I'm sure we'll be fine."
The hit soap cut back on episodes in March as the lockdown rules were imposed.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Coronation Street and Emmerdale will resume filming in June.
Show bosses have an action plan in place to make sure filming is safe for the cast and crew.
It seems to be better news for Corrie fans, who are eagerly awaiting more episodes from their favourite evening show.
