Benjamin Mendy makes promise to Man City fans as he reflects on injury problems

The defender has struggled with injury and form since making the move from Monaco in 2017

Benjamin Mendy says Manchester City fans have “not seen the real Mendy yet” as he reflected on his injury problems at the Etihad over the last three years.

The defender has endured an indifferent time at City since making his £52million move from Monaco back in 2017, showing glimpses of his quality in an injury-hit three seasons.

Mendy, 25, has struggled with injuries since arriving at City, having missed the majority of his first season with the club with an anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

His form on the pitch has also suffered, leading to a number of mistakes, including a costly error in the 3-2 defeat to Wolves back in December.

Speaking to Sky Sports about his time at City, Mendy admitted things hadn’t gone to plan so far, but insisted he’s working hard to rectify that for the supporters.

“It’s not easy. The people who believe in me, who took me to join Man City, for all the fans in the stadium and across the world who watch the game, I feel sorry,” he told Sky Sports.

“I would like to do something else but I can’t because the injuries I had, it was not easy. I want to fight and I want to show why City wanted to sign me. I worked hard to come back and why not more? Because every day we can improve.

“Honestly, we have not seen the real Mendy yet at Man City. I do some good games and some bad games. I need to play, play, play to come back at the top level. One time I’m injured, after I come back it’s something else, now we have the COVID.

“I would like to play and give everything now for people to see the new Mendy but if I need to wait, I will wait as I know the time will come and I’m still working.”
