Near-Perfect 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing to Fetch Millions at Auction
It has been given a full inside-and-out restoration.
by Eric BrainA mint condition and impeccably restored 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in “Graphite Gray” has been listed on the auction site Bring A Trailer.
This classic sports car is just one of 1,400 examples built between 1954 and 1957. It was commissioned a restoration courtesy of Rudi & Company of Victoria, British Columbia in 2014, which saw the 300SL get a complete overhaul inside and out. The three-liter inline-six engine was rebuilt, sending its factory-rated output of 215 HP to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
Other custom finishing details include Rudge knock-off wheels, seatbelts, a reproduction luggage set, and a Becker Mexico radio with a hidden Bluetooth adapter. There’s also a set of red plaid cushion coverings that can be put in place of the reupholstered gray leather interior.
Final finishing touches include a rehauled dashboard that’s now finished in leather and “Graphite Gray,” therefore matching the body. It houses a cluster of vintage dials such as a 270-km/h speedometer (167 MPH) and a five-digit odometer, which shows a total of just 750 miles.
