Horner has a solution for limited budget, but still expects pain

by

Especially teams in the midfield and rear of Formula 1 are struggling due to the corona crisis and are even threatened in their survival if this would last longer. That is why the budget ceiling will be lowered even further in the coming years. However, this will have consequences for the top teams, Christian Horner explains to The Race.

As of next season, all F1 teams will have to work with a budget of $145 million and in the following years this will even be reduced to $135 million. For a team like Red Bull Racing, this means that they will no longer be able to operate on the same scale as they do now.

In order to avoid layoffs, Red Bull hopes to be able to transfer employees of the Formula 1 team to other parts of the company. Horner's main focus is on Red Bull Advanced Technologies. That division was responsible for the Valkyrie sports car and also kept developing the Aeroscreen for IndyCar. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough.

"It is inevitable that we will be hurt by these draconian measures. But Formula 1 and especially Red Bull has always been very good at adapting to any kind of regulation," said Horner. According to Horner, it makes a difference that the regulations for 2021 now remain the same. That's one of the few benefits of the current crisis.
