A further 209 people have died from coronavirus in UK hospitals.

The increase consists of 183 hospital patients in England, 13 people in Scotland, two in Northern Ireland and 11 hospital patients and care home residents in Wales.

England has recorded a higher jump in deaths than yesterday.

No UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have been released, so the total is taken from each nation’s individual reporting.

The patients who died in England were aged between 43 and 101, with two not suffering from any underlying health conditions.

The number of deaths in the UK has slowly been dropping

Yesterday the death count in the UK's care homes, hospitals and wider community reached 37,048, although the Official for National Statistics estimated the real figure was actually more than 47,000.

It came as Northern Ireland reported no new deaths for the first time since March 18, almost 10 weeks ago.

Today, the north-west recorded the most deaths in England with 44 fatalities.

The east of England and the Midlands came joint second with 38, while the north-east and Yorkshire had 24, the south-east 17, London 15 and the south-west 7.

The total number of Covid-19 deaths in English hospitals has now hit 26,049.

Public Health Wales today announced said a further 11 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of deaths in Wales to 1,293.

Another 97 people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 13,653.

The number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Northern Ireland has risen to 516 after two more deaths were reported by the Department of Health.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also told of 13 new fatalities in Scotland, raising the nation's total count to 2,304.

Speaking at First Minister's Questions at Holyrood, she announced 15,240 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 55 from 15,185 previous day.

There are 1,247 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, a rise of 47.

Of these patients, 38 were in intensive care, a rise of three.

The death figures differ from the weekly statistics released by the National Records of Scotland today.

This is because the National Records of Scotland covers patients who have tested positive and the latter involves all registered deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate, whether confirmed or suspected.

A total of 3,779 people have died in Scotland with confirmed or suspected coronavirus, according to the National Records of Scotland (NRS).

There were 230 deaths relating to Covid-19 registered between May 18 and May 24, down 105 on the previous week. This marks the fourth consecutive weekly reduction in deaths involving the virus.

More than half of all registered deaths involving Covid-19 in week 21 occurred in care homes, at 54% compared to 55% in week 20.

The number of deaths in care homes also fell for a fourth week in a row, down by 62 in a week to 124.
