iPhone 11 Is the Top Selling Smartphone in 2020 by a Mile – Report

by

2020 is an interesting year for smartphones. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has shaken the supply chain and sales of smartphones and people are curious about the sales of smartphones around the world.

Well, Omdia has done a report of the sales performance of several smartphones in Q1 2020 and it is quite interesting.

Apple’s iPhone 11 was the top-selling smartphone in Q1 2020 where it was found to have sold 19.5 million units. Same time last year, the iPhone XR sold 13.6 million units, which is interesting since you would expect declining sales this year, but it seems Apple is immune to the changes.

Second on the list is Samsung’s Galaxy A51, a $399 mid-ranger that sold 6.8 million units in Q1 2020. The delta between the Galaxy A51 and the iPhone 11 is hilariously massive (12.7 million) and it shows Apple is doing ridiculously well at this difficult year.

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note  8 did extremely well by selling 6.6 million in the same period. Their Redmi Note 8 Pro quickly followed with 6.1 million units.

Surprisingly, the iPhone XR was 5th on the list with 4.7 million units sold in the same period. This was the top-selling smartphone last year and it shows why it is still very popular. Apple reduced its price by $100 when they announced the iPhone 11 series and people are still attracted to its price point.

The other top-selling models include:

It seems like Samsung’s new S20 series of smartphones are not doing so well, where they lag behind their very own A10s and their competition which include the iPhone 11 Pro series.

I still expect the iPhone 11 to continue dominating the charts in 2020. In 2019, Apple sold 37.3 million iPhone 11s in 3 months, which shows how ridiculously popular that smartphone is for Apple. For a $700 phone (minimum), Apple seems not to have a problem shipping a ton of these and you can expect it to sell more than the iPhone XR, which sold 46.3 million last year combined.
