Unearthing pieces of ancient times is a heart-stopping experience that we don't get to experience often, and admittedly, 2020 hasn't been filled with highlights that nurture the soul. However, a recent development in the field of archeology has brought a stunning Roman mosaic that hasn't seen the light of day for who knows how long to our attention.
Italian archeologists have discovered a stunning Roman mosaic floor in the Valpolicella region in the Verona province of Italy. The local news source reported that "the mosaics dating back to the first century after Christ were found in excellent condition."
The photos of the peculiar event were posted on Twitter on May 26, 2020 by historian Myko Clelland.
Clelland wrote that the mosaics were discovered under a vineyard in Negrar di Valpolicella, a commune about 12 kilometers northwest of Verona.
The local news source reported that the scholars first found evidence of a Roman villa located there more than a century ago. After years of searching, the floor with the well-preserved tiles was finally discovered in the vineyard in northern Italy. The images were originally published by the surveyors in the commune of Negrar di Valpolicella north of Verona.
In addition to the pristine mosaics, the foundation of the villa can also be seen in the images.
Apparently, the diggers made the discovery "after decades of failed attempts." Technicians and archeologists are still excavating the vineyard site to uncover the ancient building in its entirety, BBC reports.
As the next step, surveyors will liaise with the current owners of the vineyard and the municipality "to identify the most appropriate ways to make this archaeological treasure hidden under our feet available and accessible."
According to the local news source, the technicians will need "significant resources" to uncover the entire finding. However, local authorities will be there to give "all necessary help" to make the excavation possible.
Dopo innumerevoli decenni di tentativi falliti, finalmente è stata riportata alla luce parte della pavimentazione e delle fondamenta della Villa romana ubicata a nord del capoluogo, scoperta dagli studiosi oltre un secolo fa.
I tecnici della Soprintendenza di Verona, con un carotaggio mirato del suolo, stanno parzialmente scoprendo i resti del manufatto ancora presenti sotto alcuni metri di terra, con un obiettivo preciso: identificare l'esatta estensione e la esatta collocazione della antica costruzione. Successivamente, la Soprintendenza si raccorderà con i proprietari dell'area e con il Comune per individuare le modalità più adeguate per rendere disponibile e visitabile questo tesoro archeologico nascosto da sempre sotto i nostri piedi. Il risultato non arriverà a breve e occorreranno risorse rilevanti. Ma è importante, finalmente, tracciare la strada.
Il Comune presterà tutta la collaborazione necessaria e ringrazia fin da ora i professionisti della Soprintendenza e i proprietari dell'area per l'unità di intenti e la disponibilità con la quale stanno perseguendo il progetto.
