Premier League clubs have received the green light to return to close contact training.

The 20 members of the top flight met on Wednesday and voted in favour of a return to normal training methods after the Government introduced Stage Two of its plan earlier this week.

Premier League clubs will now be allowed to train as normal, though players have been asked to avoid any 'unnecessary close contact' away from the training field.

The news comes as a boost to West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United with the Championship's top two desperate for the season to be completed.

Albion and Leeds returned to training earlier this week and continue to push for their own campaigns to be restarted, and they're set to be updated by the EFL in the coming days.

But the Premier League are on target for their planned June return date with clubs set to step up their training.

A Premier League statement read: "Premier League Shareholders today voted unanimously to resume contact training, marking another step towards restarting the Premier League season, when safe to do so.

"Squads are now able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising any unnecessary close contact.

"The Premier League’s priority is the health and wellbeing of all participants.

"Strict medical protocols are in place to ensure the training ground is the safest environment possible and players and staff will continue to be tested for COVID-19 twice a week.

"Stage Two of the Return to Training protocol has been agreed following consultation with clubs, players, managers, the PFA, LMA and the Government.

"Discussions are ongoing as work continues towards resuming the season, when conditions allow."
