Man, 28, to stand trial after shop worker attacked with machete

A 28-year-old man is to stand trial after a shop worker and another man were attacked.

The shop worker, a man in his 30s, was hit with a machete, while the other man, in his 40s, was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance.

The man in his 30s suffered a cut near his ear while the other man was left uninjured, say police.

Mohammed Malik, of Shawbury Grove, Highgate, is accused of wounding, possession of an offensive weapon and assault.

Malik appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday where he was remanded into custody.

He will now stand trial at Birmingham Crown Court on June 22.

The incident took place in Somerville Road, Small Heath, on Saturday.

Police say members of the public helped detain a man after the attack.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We were called after a shop worker was hit with a hatchet in Handa News, Somerville Road, Small Heath, around 5.45pm Saturday.

“The man, aged in his 30s, suffered a cut near his ear.

“Another man in his 40s was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance but was left uninjured.

“Members of the public helped detain a 28-year-old man.

“Mohammed Malik, aged 28, of Shawbury Grove, Highgate, is accused of wounding, possession of an offensive weapon and assault offences."
