Newcastle reportedly want Liverpool star that Gini Wijnaldum reckons adds ‘arrogance’

by

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri ahead of the summer window – and Gini Wijnaldum once claimed the pocket-sized Reds attacker adds “arrogance”.

Shaqiri, 28, is likely to leave Anfield this summer after a struggle with injuries prevented the former Bayern Munich attacker from making more than just 10 appearances in all competitions throughout the 2019-20 campaign.

The Daily Mail claim Newcastle’s soon-to-be new owners are interested in adding the Switzerland international to The Toon squad in the coming months. Liverpool are willing to sanction Shaqiri’s exit, and Shaqiri is open to joining Newcastle.

Back in October 2018, Liverpool beat Cardiff City 4-1 and Shaqiri came on to the field of play on the hour mark – scoring in the 84th minute. Wijnaldum told the Liverpool Echo after the match that Shaqiri’s introduction added “arrogance”.

“He helped to give us a little bit more arrogance,” said Wijnaldum. “He helped us to calm down the game again because they were pressing, they had a feeling that they could score the second goal and he took that away.”

TBR’s view – Shaqiri would be a top, top signing for Newcastle

During his time at Stoke, Shaqiri single-handedly provided the threat and almost kept the Potters in the Premier League under Mark Hughes. In his 114 Premier League appearances, Shaqiri has been involved in a goal less than every three games.

Finding the back of the net 22 times, Shaqiri has proved just as creative – laying on 18 assists. Would he be a good addition at Newcastle? Certainly, he would massively improve their goal threat and probably be available on the cheap.
