El-P Showcases Film Scoring Chops With "This Is Al That's Left"

El P tells a powerful story with the instrumental "Capone" score, as revealed by climactic "This Is Al That's Left."

Not many rappers can actively produce a film score, but El-P is something of a rare breed. Though his Blade Runner 2049 score was ultimately rejected, he bounced back by signing on to provide original music for Tom Hardy's Capone. Having previously scored the 2004 film Bomb The System, as well as producing countless futuristic bangers, it's clear that El is no stranger to instrumental storytelling. The depth of his talent is unveiled with "This Is Al That's Left," the song that ultimately goes on to close out the film.

"[The song contains] elements from all of the major musical themes we created for the film woven into one more traditional instrumental form," explains El, speaking to Rolling Stone. "It ends the film so it really had to be a definitive feeling emotionally for what Capone was about.” As for the song itself, it's somewhat of a slow-burner, an atmospheric and vaguely melancholic arrangement of vintage synthesizers. For those who can appreciate the subtle art of film score, it's clear that El understands how to convey emotion through simplicity -- one can only imagine what his piece brings to the film's climactic visuals.
