Want a more stylish E-Class? Coupe and Cabriolet variants now launched

by

Last March, Mercedes-Benz digitally launched the updated E-Class for 2020 in the wake of the canceled Geneva Motor Show. At the time, however, Mercedes only revealed the sedan and wagon variants.

Now, nearly two months later, the sportier and not to mention more stylish two-door variants have officially made their debut as well – the 2020 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. Better yet, they also launched the more powerful AMG E53 Coupe and Cabriolet models together as well.

The most obvious changes made to the 2020 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are the visual updates. Both the coupe and drop-top models now have the same front end featuring slimmer LED headlights with a new daytime running light (DRL) signature. The grill has also been made wider and more rounded as compared to the outgoing model.

Unlike the sedan, however, the rear end of both the E-Class coupe and cabriolet have been carried over from the pre-facelift model. They retain the same slim LED taillights as before with no visual changes made to the bumpers. The optional AMG Line kit with 18-inch wheels is still available to give the coupe and convertible a sportier look.

Now if you want the power to match the looks, the AMG E 53 might suit you better. Design updates are similar to that of the standard E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. But, it features the signature AMG Panamericana grill, and sportier front and rear bumpers. It also has a twin-tip dual exhaust along with other sporty exterior upgrades like the standard 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels which are upgradeable to the larger 20-inch set. Optional AMG Night Package and AMG Carbon Fiber Package help add more aggressiveness to the model.

Step inside, and the changes from the pre-facelift are very obvious on both the AMG E 53 and the standard E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. Much like the sedan, the cabin has been updated with loads of tech. Aside from new upholstery, trim, and steering wheel options, the Coupe, Cabriolet and E 53 models come with Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment system as standard.

It features a 12.3-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Gone are the rotary dials and in its place is a touchpad that acts as a mouse to navigate the menus. Just like the sedan, the coupe and cabriolet are loaded with new technology and safety features. It is even available with semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

Under the hood sports the biggest change for the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. Gone are the V6 engines and in its place are turbocharged straight-six units. However, the turbo four-cylinder mills have been retained with the E 350 producing 255 PS. Meanwhile, the E 450 with the new turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder now puts out 365 PS and 500 Nm of torque. Turbo-diesels are still available in the form of E 220d and E 400d.

The more powerful AMG E 53 variants use the same 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six as the E450. However, power is rated at 435 PS and 520 Nm torque and shifts via the AMG Speedshift 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four wheels via Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.
