'If I shed layers, I'm a sl*t': Billie Eilish tackles body-shaming in short film
by Emma KellyBillie Eilish has tackled body shaming and double standards in a powerful new short film.
Entitled Not My Responsibility, the film was originally shown during Billie’s When We All Fall Asleep world tour, with clips of it circulating on social media.
However, the 18-year-old has now released the film in full on her YouTube channel, with the full message now on show.
In it, the Bad Guy singer is seen removing her baggy hoodie, followed by her vest, until she is standing in her bra.
Eilish then lowers herself into a dark pool.
Over the film, the Grammy Award-winner is heard narrating: ‘Do you know me? Really know me? You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body.
‘Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it. Some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me. But I feel you watching. Always. Nothing I do goes unseen, so while I feel your stares, your disapproval, or your sigh of relief, I lived by them, I’d never be able to move.
‘Would you like me to be smaller, weaker, softer, taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach, my hips, the body I was born with – is it not what you wanted? If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed layers, I’m a slut.
‘Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why? You make assumptions about people based on their size. We decide who they are, we decide what they’re worth. If I wear more, if I wear less, who decides what that makes me, what that means? Is my value based only on your perception, or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?’
‘Not my responsibility’ flashes up on the screen at the film’s conclusion.
Billie’s fans praised the message of the film, which has already racked up over two million views.
The No Time To Die singer is known for her signature baggy style, often wearing oversized jumpers, jackets, shorts and trousers on the red carpet.
But she has been shamed for whatever she wears, with some trolls saying she’d be more attractive if she wore ‘better fitting’ clothes, while others slut-shamed her when her figure was visible as her hoodie opened to reveal a vest.
Speaking to Elle, she said: ‘The point is not: Hey, let’s go slut-shame all these girls for not dressing like Billie Eilish. It makes me mad. I have to wear a big shirt for you not to feel uncomfortable about my boobs!’
Addressing the vest she was ridiculously shamed over, Billie added: ‘I look good in it. I was born with f***ing boobs, bro. I was born with DNA that was gonna give me big-ass boobs.
‘Someone with smaller boobs could wear a tank top, and I could put on that exact tank top and get slut-shamed because my boobs are big. That is stupid. It’s the same shirt.’
And when she turned 18, Billie mocked the trolls who expected her to start wearing more revealing clothes, by wearing oversized Gucci, dahling.
She captioned a picture: ‘U mad i turned 18 & didn’t immediately take all my clothes off? booooooooohooooooooooooo.’
