Ex-Nottingham Forest flop pens new non-league deal

The ex-England youngster failed to make the grade at the City Ground

Former Nottingham Forest defender Louis Laing has committed his future to non-league outfit Darlington.

Laing was a summer arrival in 2014 when Stuart Pearce secured him from Sunderland after his Stadium of Light deal ended, but the ex-England youngster struggled with injury and failed to make a single appearance in the first team, despite coming with a promising reputation.

Playing in 38 matches last term, 27-year-old Laing had an impressive campaign at Blackwell Meadows, and boss Alun Armstrong has secured his immediate future with the National League North outfit ahead of the new campaign.

At age of 21, Laing arrived in Nottingham from Weirside, but the defender’s impact was limited, and ended up spending a spell on loan at cross city neighbours Notts County and then Wycombe Wanderers before moving on after an option on his one-year contract was taken up.

Since leaving the City Ground for Motherwell where he spent two seasons, including another short spell at Meadow Lane, he’s played for Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Hartlepool and Blyth Spartans.

Having been signed by Reds legend Pearce in 2014, he became the club’s fourth arrival of that summer, following Danny Fox, Lars Veldwijk and Matty Fryatt.
