Ramatu Aliyu: FCT state minister donates salary for inmates release

In the spirit of goodwill and selfless service, minister of state for FCT, Hajia Ramatu Aliyu, has channelled her May salary towards the release of five inmates from Kuje prison.

According to The Nation, the kind gesture of the minister was carried out to celebrate the recently held Sallah, marking the end of Muslims' fasting period.

Aliyu said the donation will go a long way in helping to decongest the overcrowded correctional centre nationwide amid coronavirus crisis.

She further added that FCT will take legal action against the state of the prisons in order to secure the release of inmates who could not pay their fines.

The minister stated that she will solicit the help of top Nigerians to reduce numbers of inmates in the correctional centres across the country, vowing to continually "pick up some bills."

Speaking with the inmates, Aliyu said she will kickstart a campaign that will see into the plight of the inmates with a view to getting the prison decongested since the government is burdened with other enormous responsibilities.

Garba Shehu, senior media aide to the president, dusted off the growing insinuation spreading in the media, saying the reports are just fabrication and lie flying in the face of fact.

He further explained that as the duly democratically-elected president, Buhari has never ceded constitutional power to his aides.

"There is not a grain of truth in these reports and Nigerians should please ignore the insinuations behind them," Garba Shehu said.
