Formula 1 cars will be heavier again in 2021 and 2022

by

Where current drivers and also former Formula 1 drivers complain stone and leg about the weight of the Formula 1 cars, there is bad news for 2021. The cars will be heavier again next year.

In seven years time, today's Formula 1 cars are more than 100 kilos heavier than their predecessors and that causes a lot of frustration among drivers. The cars are more and more cumbersome than before and the cars are also much wider. Because of this the cars are more stable and seem to go over a limit less quickly and mistakes are not made.

Even more kilos

Racefans.net has learned that in 2021, despite the fact that the rules remain the same, the cars will go from 746kg to a minimum of 749kg. An increase of 3kg doesn't seem much, but since the V6 engines, the cars have become as much as 16 percent heavier in seven years and with the new rules even more is coming.

According to Racefans.net the cars have a minimum weight of no less than 778kg according to the new rules. This is another jump of almost 30kg. Extra downforce on the car and stronger power sources should still make the cars drive fast, but the question is whether this promotes racing?
