Suhail Shaheen, a spokesperson for the political office of Taliban, issued a statement online and welcomed the release of 900 prisoners.
“The release of 900 prisoners by the other side is a good progress. The Islamic Emirate will release a remarkable number of prisoners soon, inshaAllah,” he said in a Twitter post.
The Afghan government released 900 prisoners of the Taliban group late on Tuesday.
The government released a group of 100 Taliban prisoners a day before the release of 900 prisoners of Taliban in a bid to help the peace process.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani had earlier vowed to expedite the release of Taliban prisoners in a bid to reciprocate the move by the group for announcing ceasefire on three days of Eid Al-Fitr.
The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said President Ghani convened a meeting in ARG Palace late on Sunday to discuss the release of Taliban prisoners in return to Taliban’s gesture of goodwill for announcing ceasefire during Eid Days.
