Covid-19: Wike cancels lockdown in Rivers, imposes statewide curfew

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has cancelled his earlier decision to resume lockdown of the capital city, comprising Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt local government areas, over the coronavirus pandemic.
The Nation reports that the Rivers state governor made his latest decision known on Tuesday, May 26, during a statewide broadcast.
In place of the cancelled lockdown, Legit.ng gathers that Governor Wike has imposed a statewide curfew from 8pm to 6am. The new directive takes effect from Tuesday, June 2 till further notice.

“After a comprehensive review of the measures taken and further considerations placed before us by well-meaning members of the public, the state security council has decided to cancel the proposed lockdown," the governor said.
“In essence, no part of Rivers state is or will be under any lockdown from this moment and this will be so, except where it becomes necessary again”.
Governor Wike, however, urged the residents to abide by all the relevant precautionary measures to avoid further infections in the state. It is also compulsory for residents to wear face makes while going out to avoid being arrested.
He also reiterated that all land borders in the state remain closed, with the exception of essential services.
The Rivers state governor added that all bars, beer parlours, or drinking joints, night-clubs, viewing centres, open markets and cinemas remain closed till further notice.
He commended all health workers who continued to put their lives at risk at the forefront of the battle against the pandemic.

In another report, the sum of N450 million has been released by Governor Wike to the victims of the bloody 2019 general elections in Ijaw communities in Abonema, Akuku-Toru local government area of the state.
The governor met with the victims, deceased families and the council of chiefs at their townhall in Abonema on Monday, May 25.
According to the report, the governor assured them that their bank account numbers would be credited with the amount of money due them from Wednesday, May 27.
There were indications that the families of 37 persons, who paid the supreme price, were entitled to N9m compensation each.
