Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United have emerged as shock suitors for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, according to reports.

Higuain returned to Italy last summer after an unsuccessful loan stint with Chelsea having scored just five Premier League goals.

Juve reportedly want to offload him in the next transfer window with the ex-Argentina international, 32, struggling back in Serie A.

The Express suggest that the two Premier League clubs, along with MLS side DC United and his first club River Plate are all interested.

Any concrete approach from Wolves would be a major change in transfer policy, with the majority of signings arriving at Molineux with resale value in mind.

And the player himself has hinted that if he has the chance, he would relish a return to his boyhood club, River.

"River are a club that gave me everything, from letting me develop to Real Madrid buying me, but right now I don't know what's going to happen. My head is here [in Turin]," he told TyC Sports.

"[Marcelo] Gallardo's team are very exciting, they have quality, strength, everything.

"The truth that you watch them and their number nine gets many chances. Clearly someone who played for River before will watch that team, see themselves there and say, 'how nice'.

"Gallardo has caught everyone's eyes and he's earned it. I'd think about going back to River to retire."
