Solskjaer delivers Ighalo update

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes Manchester United can come to an agreement with Shanghai Shenhua to keep Odion Ighalo at Old Trafford beyond the expiry of his loan contract.

The Nigerian arrived in January on a short-term loan deal which concludes at the end of this month and MEN Sport understands the forward is set to depart this week , with the Chinese Super League side keen for the striker to return.

That could leave United short in attack when the Premier League season eventually restarts, which is why Solskjaer is hopeful a deal can be struck which would enable Ighalo to see out the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign.

"The loan deal went to the end of May, so obviously he's supposed to be going back," Solskjaer explained to United’s official website . “We’re in dialogue. They’ve been great towards us, his club, and allowed him to play for his dream club.

"It’s been a dream for him and hopefully he can finish off what he started, hopefully with a trophy for us. At the moment, nothing has been agreed. Their league is going to get started soon so we’re just waiting to see.”

Ighalo's agent said talks between United and Shanghai to keep Ighalo are ongoing.

Opinion: United may wonder what might have been

When still just a 15-year-old prodigy in his native Canada, Alphonso Davies was first recommended to United by the club's former international scout Jorge Alvial.

Then a raw winger, Davies’ talent was undeniable and Alvial convinced United to offer him a three-week trial in January 2018. Yet it didn't happen.

Instead Davies spent that month on a training camp with the Canada Olympic team. Later that year he would agree to join Bayern Munich at the end of the 2018 MLS season in a deal worth close to £18million.

Fast forward to the present day and Davies is Bayern’s breakout star. He has thrived in his role as an attacking left-back; his energy and pace virtually unmatched in the Bundesliga and his technique and positional awareness constantly being refined.

The 19-year-old impressed once more in Bayern’s victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday - he recorded one of the fastest sprints in Bundesliga history (of 21.9mph) when chasing back to deny Erling Haaland - and United may now understandably wonder what might have been.

Premier League and players hold “constructive” talks

Positive talks have been held between the Premier League and players, according to PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor, as the English top flight inches closer to a return.

Three rounds of meetings are understood to have taken place between managers, captains and club doctors on Tuesday with the aim of alleviating and addressing concerns prior to a vote on whether to implement phase two of Project Restart today (Wednesday).

“The talks were very good, open and constructive and the players were given answers to some deep, searching and good questions,” PFA chief Taylor told the Mirror

“The Premier League have been very responsive on this from answering questions on the BAME issue to listening to the players and managers who are at the top of their profession.

“The respect has been there and it’s been hugely appreciated.”

If approved, Phase Two of Project Restart would enable up to ten players to train together and allow longer sessions with players in closer proximity.

Premier League managers are ready to back the implementation of Phase Two, according to the Mirror , but want the resumption of matches to be delayed in order to give players more time to train and build up their fitness.
