Outdoor spaces and improved transport options - how a new east Manchester arena could lead on sustainability as well as boosting the economy
OVG aim to make the proposed new east Manchester arena the most sustainable in the UK
by Natasha YoungEast Manchester's proposed new arena could not only bring thousands of jobs and a huge £350m investment to the city, but outdoor spaces and transport improvements are also at the heart of the plans.
OVG, who are behind the 23,500-capacity venue, aim to make it the most sustainable in the UK with features including a terrace for visitors to enjoy during both event and non-event days.
The outdoor area would run along the canal side at the Eastlands site, where work could get underway on the project as early as September this year.
Committed to supporting Manchester City Council's ambitions to be net-zero carbon by 2038, and build on sustainability initiatives which are already in place at the city's Etihad Campus, OVG's plans include measures to reduce congestion once the arena is up and running too.
In addition the venue is planned to be fully inclusive, aspiring for the Attitude is Everything Gold Status, which would make it in the top tier of accessible arenas in the UK.
Leading the design and operation of the arena, OVG also pledge to minimise waste and packaging, starting with the supply chain, while supporting local food bank donation programmes.
Mark Donnelly, chief operating officer at OVG, said: “We’re building the next generation of venue in Manchester and, to make sure it is future proof, we’ve put a huge effort into maximising both the sustainability and accessibility of the arena.
“Our plans support Manchester’s Zero Carbon 2038 strategy and minimise energy and waste from the venue whilst also benefitting from excellent public transport links and initiatives to make walking and cycling the preferred travel options.
"The new arena will generate value for the local community with a range of new employment and skills opportunities and importantly it’s been designed as a best-in-class inclusive venue for both audience and performers.”
Rob Amphlett, head of sports and entertainment sector at OVG’s sustainability consultants Buro Happold, added: “The new arena will promote sustainability and pioneer energy efficiency and best practice low carbon design.
"The proposals go far beyond all council planning targets for sustainable development and set a new benchmark for venues in the UK.”

The arena's sustainable design features
- The surface of the proposed arena's roof - around 1.5 times the size of the Etihad Stadium's football pitch - is maximised for solar panel use.
- The arena will feature intelligent energy efficiency designs.
- Plans incorporate a range of accessibility measures, including a sensory room, wheelchair user viewing spaces throughout the arena, and accessible back of house and performance areas to enable artists with additional needs to operate freely.

Venue operation
- OVG are developing a "world-leading security strategy" with their own security advisory service Prevent Advisors, alongside Greater Manchester Police and the existing Etihad Campus operations team.
- An access group with local disability groups will be set up to inform the delivery of the venue's inclusivity plans.
Encouraging sustainable transport
- Extra shuttle bus services for event days are included in OVG's plans, adding to the trams, buses and rail links that already serve Etihad Campus well.
- Visitors attending events at the arena once its open will be actively encouraged by the venue to use public transport options.
