Dead To Me: Same-sex romance was purposefully 'not a big deal'

Dead To Me showrunner Liz Feldman has revealed Judy and Michelle’s romance was to help push society into a ‘post-label universe’.

The second season of the acclaimed Netflix show saw Linda Cardellini’s character Judy fall head over heels for chef Michelle, finally getting over her ex-fiancé Steve.

And no one, including Christina Applegate’s character Jen, batted an eye.

Speaking about Judy and Michelle’s relationship, Feldman explained the nonchalant way in which the couple started dating, and the non-existing reaction to it was completely intentional.

‘The [uneventful way we] played the [Judy/Michelle] relationship was incredibly deliberate and purposeful,’ she said.

‘As a gay woman who has been writing a really long time, I’ve had the opportunity to tell the “coming out story.” I wanted to see a different version of it.

‘I wanted to see a no-big-deal version of it because, to me, it is no big deal. It felt fresh to me to treat a burgeoning relationship between two women like it was totally normal.’

Feldman continued that while Dead To Me existing in a ‘post-label universe’ is ‘probably a little idealistic, she’s hopeful that as a society ‘we are getting there.’

She added to TVLine: ‘I just wanted to help us get there a little bit faster.’

We rate that.

Although Dead To Me season two landed earlier this month, there’s still no word on whether it will be returning for a third chapter.

Feldman, however, is hopeful that audiences will get to see Judy and Jen return for another innings – and we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
