Motherwell Football Club are in mourning after the sudden death of former player Christian Mbulu - aged just 23.

The centre-back played a mere six times for the Steelemen during the 2018/19 season after completing a move from Millwall.

But he made a lasting impression around Fir Park with his kind-nature and positive outlook.

And last night the club and his former team-mates paid tribute to the Londoner, who also played for Braintree, Brentwood, Crewe and, most recently, Morecambe down south.

Motherwell chairman Jim McMahon said: "We are shocked to hear of the news of Christian's death.

"He was such a friendly, pleasant young man who we loved having around Fir Park.

"Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time. We hope their privacy is respected by everyone as they try to come terms with their loss."

Fir Park chief executive officer, Alan Burrows, paid tribute on Twitter, posting: "I am absolutely shocked and totally devastated for Christian’s family and friends. I cannot believe it; he was such a nice bloke and always had a positive outlook.

"May he rest in peace."

Players also paid tribute on social media with former winger Jake Hastie posting: "Rest easy big man. Taken far too soon."

And Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull said: "Taken far too soon. Rest east big guy. Absolute legend."

Mbulu was found dead at his home near Preston on Tuesday afternoon. Police said his death is not being treated as suspicious.
