Warner Bros.' 'The Batmobile Documentary' Now Streaming for Free
Following 70 years of the iconic superhero vehicle.
by Jeff YeungWarner Bros. and DC Comics have put together a documentary following Batman‘s iconic Batmobile, and it’s now free to stream over on YouTube.
The almost hour-long documentary covers the entire 70-year lifespan of the Batmobile so far, although it doesn’t include the latest iteration driven by Ben Affleck in the DC Extended Universe. Starting from its very origins, the caped crusader was first featured driving around in an unknown two-door hardtop all the way back in 1939, in the 27th issue of Detective Comics. From there, it took two years before DC Comics coined the term “Batmobile,” dressing the superhero’s car up in black — as opposed to the original red — and added various bat-themed decorations such as batwings on the rear. Then, in 1943, the Batmobile finally hit the silver screen, with Bruce Wayne driving a Cadillac during the day with its top down, while driving the exact same car at night as Batman, only with the top raised.
Aside from its early years, the documentary also covers the many different variations of the legendary car since its proliferation in the Batman television series starring the great Adam West, who drove a re-decorated concept car that Ford had debuted at the 1955 Chicago Auto Show. Viewers get to learn all about Michael Keaton’s version based on a Chevrolet Impala, the highly-stylized editions driven by Val Kilmer and George Clooney, and the massive tank-like vehicle piloted by Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan’s monumental Dark Knight trilogy.
