MUM'S THE WORD
Good Morning Britain’s Ben Shephard says it was ‘awful’ to not be able to hug his mum after finally seeing her
by Carl GreenwoodBEN Shepherd was emotional on Good Morning Britain today as he said it was "awful" how he couldn't hug his mum after seeing her for the first time in months.
The presenter hasn't seen his mum in months and he was overjoyed to finally see her again - but he said it was 'awful' to not being able to hug her.
Speaking on today's show, he said: "I was able to see my mum socially distanced, we had a nice game of golf and it was lovrly to see her. It was awful not being able to give her a hug though."
Yesterday Ben became emotional after another mother and child reunion with an NHS carer mum reuniting with her daughter.
Ben, 45, has been sitting in for Piers Morgan and couldn't stop his tears as singer Callum Scott surprised the family with an emotional performance on the ITV show.
Dad-of-two Ben sobbed after seeing Lisa Cave, 40, crying as she was reunited on air with her seven-year-old daughter Ruby.
He had chatted to the pair about Lisa and Ruby's heartwarming viral video of them hugging in person, before surprising them with their favourite singer on the show.
Even chart topper Callum started to cry during his performance of You Are The Reason, the song that Lisa played when she was first reunited with Ruby, but was forced to wear a hazmat suit to protect her.
But Ben confessed it had "really got me" and his co-host Charlotte Hawkins said "I think we were all crying," while Lisa wiped away her tears throughout the interview.
Lisa has been separated from her daughter because she is worried about exposing Ruby, who suffers from asthma, and Ruby's dad Paul to coronavirus while she takes care of vulnerable people.
Viewers were in bits during the interview, and took to Twitter to say they felt the same as Ben.
One said: "OMG... it’s not even 8.30am and I’m in tears 😭 already!! "
Another viewers said: "First time @GMB has had me in tears....well the lovely kind not the frustrating type when #mouthallmighty is on. That hug, Amazing"
Lisa revealed Ruby didn't recognise her mum when she dressed in PPE clothing to reunite with her daughter.
Ben asked the family: "What an emotional reunion. Lisa, how did that feel because you as a mother faced an agonising decision to live apart from Rugby to protect her?"
She replied: "The hug was just amazing just to have her in my arms again.
"It was really hard it wasn't an easy decision, but I know her dad is an amazing dad."
Explaining why she played You Are The Reason over their reunion video, Lisa added: "It was about everything I would do for her, swim every ocean, climb every moment to be with her."
