Ministers to question Dr Tony Holohan about 2 metre social distancing rule

by

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan is set to brief ministers about ongoing measures in the battle against COVID-19 at Government Buildings today.

Dr Holohan will discuss the latest medical data on COVID-19 and give a progress report on the roadmap to reopening society.

Afterwards, ministers will get the opportunity to ask questions with one big issue expected to be the current two metre social distancing requirement.

A number of TDs have argued that adopting the World Health Organisation's new one metre guideline would hugely assist in the reopening of businesses and schools.

However, speaking on Saturday, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the two metre social distancing rule "stands" and that there has been "no change" to public health advice.

Dr Holohan subsequently said the two metre rule is a "reasonable compromise".

Nine more people died from COVID-19 yesterday according to the Department of Health, while an additional 37 cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of cases in Ireland to 24,735.
