Coronavirus in Ballarat: Parents confused over playgrounds reopening

by

Children are waiting with bated breath but we are still not sure which playgrounds in Ballarat have reopened.

On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews said as part of restrictions easing, playgrounds, skate parks, and outdoor gym equipment will be allowed to reopen from Tuesday.

The Courier contacted council on Sunday night, and was told decisions will be made about all council infrastructure will be made during the week.

On Monday, The Courier got in touch with council asking about whether playgrounds would be opened on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, The Courier received a message from a reader, with a video showing the playground at Victoria Park being unlocked.

Several playgrounds across town were seen to still have temporary fencing or signs stating they remain closed on Tuesday afternoon.

It's understood a small number of playgrounds may open, but it's unclear which ones or when.

On Wednesday morning, people were seen using the new outdoor gym equipment around Lake Wendouree, while other people have reached out asking why playgrounds are still closed when the premier said they could open this week.

The Courier then received a message from council stating updates on community facilities will be provided via the City of Ballarat website at 5pm each day.

It's not known if this will include details on playgrounds or skate parks.

While playgrounds may be opened, according to the state government, people are urged to remain cautious and maintain social distancing to keep each other safe from the virus.

Cleaning crews are patrolling Lake Wendouree, Sturt Street, and the Bridge Mall to clean street furniture like benches and bins.

It's hoped council will provide clarity on playgrounds reopening by 5pm.
