Apple Acquires Exclusive Streaming Rights to Fraggle Rock, Strikes Deal for Reboot

by

Apple has acquired exclusive streaming rights to all Fraggle Rock episodes and struck a deal for a reboot, according to Vulture.

Weeks after debuting a handful of pandemic-produced shorts, Vulture hears the streamer has struck a deal with the Jim Henson Company to produce a formal reboot of the classic kids’ show, complete with full-length episodes. As part of the agreement, Apple has also acquired exclusive streaming rights to all 96 episodes of the original 1983–87 live-action HBO series (and some specials) and will make them available to subscribers in 100 countries on Wednesday, May 27.

Although this is the first time Apple TV+ will offer previously produced content, Vulture sources claim Apple doesn't want to become a repository for old shows. Allegedly, they feel that with the big studios looking to keep their best content, there aren't enough good titles to make a library strategy work.

This appears to contradict a recent report from Bloomberg which said Apple is taking pitches about licensing older content and has purchased some TV shows and movies for Apple TV+.

Vulture's source says the only cases in which the company might consider buying library titles is if they are related to new project.
