Mesa Public Schools weighing three options for reopening schools in August

by

MESA, AZ — The state is set to release its recommendations for reopening schools June 1 but districts are not waiting to come up with their contingency plans.

With more than 62,000 students Mesa Public Schools has one of the biggest tasks ahead and the clock is ticking.

Still meeting virtually because of COVID-19, the Mesa Public Schools Governing Board is tracking progress on plans to reopen schools August 4. Like districts across the state, Mesa's "Open School Task Force" is weighing three options. Those options include face-to-face instruction, hybrid or intermittent schooling and remote learning.

With 170 members focused on 11 different areas, key issues like technology, family support, health and safety, and educational change are at the forefront. Decisions are being made with a commitment to "safety and wellness," "offering choices" to the community and "personalizing learning for every student."

Parents, students and teachers will likely get more answers after June 10 when the task force team plans are due. The goal is to be ready to launch the 2020-2021 school year by July.

The task force will continue meeting in the coming weeks. More specifics are expected to emerge as districts incorporate guidelines from the state, but even those plans could change as the first day of school approaches.
