Mesa PD: Impairment suspected in fatal crash near Greenfield Road and Loop 202

by

MESA, AZ — Mesa police say impairment may have played a factor in a deadly single-vehicle crash in Mesa Tuesday morning.

Authorities say the victims' car was northbound on Greenfield Road from the Loop 202 when it hit a curb at the end of a cul-de-sac, sending it airborne before hitting the ground and flipping on its roof.

Police say one of the occupants was able to free himself, but the other three had to be extricated by firefighters.

Police say the driver, Melanie Reina Lopez, 43, and 28-year-old Michael Norris, Jr. died in the crash. The other two passengers suffered minor injuries.

Officers say the group was driving to the reservation and thought they were on Gilbert Road, not Greenfield Road.

"Impairment is believed to be a factor in this collision," said Mesa Police Detective Jason Flam.
