Taiwan economic development to focus on six areas

by

The National Development Council (NDC) has proposed strategies for boosting Taiwan's economic development, focusing on six areas: Semiconductor, biotechnology/medical care, digital transformation, satellite communication devices, cybersecurity, Internet infrastructure.

TSMC is going to undertake R&D of 2nm technology, and the academia in Taiwan is expected to cooperate with TSMC in R&D of next-generation angstrom (1/10 of a nanometer) technology, said Wu Tsung-tsong, who has just become minister of the Science and Technology Ministry (MOST).

Taiwan's strong biotech can be used to develop medical devices, pharmaceuticals, precision medicine and smart health care, Wu noted.

Digital transformation in Taiwan has so far focused on manufacturing industries which take up 30% of its GDP, and MOST will begin to promote digital transformation for service sectors in 2021.

Viewing that 6G in the future will involve application of low-orbit communication satellites, the government will help makers produce communication devices for use in such satellites.
