Salvation Army opens heat relief stations in metro Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) - The Salvation Army on Wednesday opened heat relief stations across metro Phoenix as forecasters say temperatures will reach as high as 112 degrees in some desert areas by Friday.

The National Weather Service said an excessive heat warning will be in effect through late Sunday.

Forecasters advised people to stay indoors in air-conditioned buildings and to drink more water than usual while dressing for the heating.

Scott Johnson of the Salvation Army told KJZZ that people arriving at the heat stations will be given a bag containing a mask, gloves and a small bottle of hand sanitizer because of concerns about the coronavirus.

According to azfamily.com, the Salvation Army heat relief stations are located in Apache Junction, Apache Junction, Chandler, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Surprise and Tempe.

A mobile hydration unit will also be used to help homeless encampments in the metro Phoenix.
