Schools a challenge for security cluster

THE reopening of schools is posing a challenge to members of the security cluster who are accommodated in several school hostels countrywide.

Their deployment in various towns and at roadblocks is aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 through inter-regional travel.

Erongo police commander, commissioner Andreas Nelumbu told the governor's weekly media update that with the reopening of schools, these officers will be required to evacuate the hostels.

“This will be a challenge for us in terms of accommodating them to carry out their duties,” he said.

The commissioner said consultations are underway to see how they can continue the deployment of the officers as their presence is crucial in the fight against the spread of Covid-19.

He further said the situation in Erongo region, also categorised as zone 7, has been relatively calm over the past week and there was even a reduction in cases related to the violation of lockdown regulations.

Nelumbu, however, stressed that the sale and purchase of alcohol during the lockdown continues to top the list of violations, with four cases reported over the past week.

“The rest of the challenges are the ones we had at the beginning and these are being addressed gradually,” he said.

Other statistics include two cases of non-adherence to wearing masks in public, one prohibited gathering, as well as one case of transportation under unauthorised circumstances.

The commissioner added that in order to further educate people on the importance of adherence, the officers have shifted focus to awareness campaigns such as the 'No mask, no entry'slogan and marketing it to business owners so that they can deal with the situation when they face it. – Nampa
